Why We Shouldn't Give NIRF Ranking a Paramount Importance While Choosing a College for B.Tech?

The National Institutional Ranking Framework is an approach adopted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, to rank organizations of advanced education in India. The Framework was endorsed by the MHRD and launched by the Minister of Human Resource Development on 29 September 2015.

Some people blindly fill the Choices according to the rank given by the National Institutional Ranking Framework(NIRF) this was the case with me too while choosing colleges through JEE Mains. I have put the list of colleges in the order they have ranked by NIRF. Is this the right thing to do???  Definitely Not.

NIRF ranks the colleges with certain parameters given below:

i)Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR): This parameter adds 40% to the Ranking, It includes Faculty-Student ratio, Library facilities, laboratories, and sports facility and extracurricular activities.

ii)  Research and Professional Practice (RP): This adds to 15% to the Ranking of the institute. It considers No of Publications published and their quality, Patents, and footprint of Projects.

iii) Graduation Outcomes (GO): This Parameter contributes to  25% of the Ranking. It considers the percentage of students clearing the degree they have enrolled and their performance in public examinations.

iv) Outreach and Inclusivity(OI): Adds to 10% of the Ranking. It is based upon the percentage of students from other states, the percentage of women, facilities for physically challenged students, and Economically and socially challenged students.

v) Peer Perception: Accounts for 10% of Ranking. It includes Peer rating and application to seat ratio.

So. if we observe the above parameters they nowhere mentioned the placements which is very much an important factor for most of the students and not all the parameters required for an undergraduate for example for students who are not interested in higher studies and research the parameter Research and Professional Practice(RP) makes no damn sense to them, Most of the colleges which are not good at placements are ranked above the other which are excellent in placements because of their great research and paper publications.

Conclusion:

Figure out what you gonna pursue Higher studies or want a good Placement or any other and choose the colleges accordingly. For example, if you want to go into research and for higher studies, dig deep into the College number of publications and patents and fill the choices accordingly and if you want a good placement rank the colleges only on placements by yourself or if it is available on the internet sorted it is well and good do not compromise on credibility and choose accordingly. Every bit of information you will get on their respective college website.
